THE COSTA CALIDA / MURCIA REGION
The Costa Calida is situated to the south of Alicante and Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca and north of province of Almeria. Inland, the region's temperatures can be higher than any other on Spain's Mediterranean coast. In summer tourists flock to the sea-breeze cooled coastline. The Mar Menor lagoon which adjoins the Mediterranean is renowned for the healing effects from salts that it contains.
The Murcia province is steeped in history and tradition, its many interesting towns and villages each hold fiestas at different times of the year and everyone is welcome. Good roads, motorways and airports provide easy access to and from all parts of the country and the rest of the world. In recent years the region has become a golfer's paradise with dozens of golf courses all within easy reach.
Murcia Capital - Murcia city, the regional capital is only 40 minutes from Los Alcazares and well worth a visit. It's a busy, sprawling university city with everything from museums and art galleries to modern shopping centres and wide choice of restaurants and tapas bars.
Cartagena - This old naval city, now a popular port of call for cruise ships, is just a few minutes drive from Los Alcazares. It is a charismatic city with many attractions. Its gothic and modern buildings are interspersed with recently excavated ancient ruins dating back to Roman times and earlier. When you've finished shopping, the Naval and Civil War museums are well worth a visit. Take the scenic tour bus around the town and the tourist ferry around the rejuvenated port to discover long and colourful history of the city with English commentary.
San Pedro del Pinatar - offers everything you would expect from a large town. San Pedro is an interesting and charming town which is a popular destination for visitors of all nationalities particularly the Spanish themselves. The a resident population of around 22,000 rises greatly during the summer. There is a busy street market every Monday. San Pedro's excellent marina offers watersports including sailing, windsurfing, diving, jet skiing. For those who prefer golf, San Pedro del Pinatar is an excellent location. Three courses on the Orihuela Costa are just a 15 minute drive away, also close by are the courses of La Manga, Roda, La Torre Golf Resort, the Los Alcazares Golf Club and the Mar Menor Golf Resort. San Pedro straddles both the Mar Menor and The Mediterranean with the Salinas National Park between the two, here at Lo Pagan the mineral-rich mud is popular with locals and tourists alike as is is said to offer healing properties for a range of medical problems. La Cuerva de Lo Pagan is revered by many for its large number of bars, cafés, restaurants and and disco nightclubs that party-on till dawn in the summer months. Cabo de Palos - A small fishing village with a picturesque harbour surrounded by many restaurants, take a walk to the lighthouse and take in the stunning views, the small cove is great a place to scuba dive.
